Post Election Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 5, 2025

Contact: Amyforaurora@gmail.com

Statement from Amy Wiles, Aurora Ward 2 City Councilmember-Elect on Election Results

“Thank you. Last night, we proved that putting community first and focusing on positivity, solutions, and open dialogue was the kind of leadership Aurora voters were looking for. This was a grassroots movement fueled by hope, hard work, and the belief that local government can and should put people first.

Thank you to everyone who opened their doors, shared their stories, and welcomed me into your home.

Thank you to my team and every volunteer who spent evenings knocking on doors, everyone who donated five dollars, and those who simply offered words of encouragement. You reminded me daily that change doesn’t start with big money or big titles — it starts with ordinary people who care enough to show up for their community.

To my family and friends who stood beside me through long nights and early mornings — your love and patience carried me through. I couldn’t have done this without you.

And to every resident of Aurora Ward 2 — thank you for caring about our community and being part of this effort to make our city stronger, safer, and more connected. I look forward to working with you to ensure Ward 2 is the best ward in the city. Please stay involved, attend meetings, lend your voice to the process, and hold me accountable. Our city needs you.

This isn’t the end just because the campaign is over — it’s the continuation of the work we started. I believe that by keeping Community First, we’ll move Aurora forward.”

Why Vote for Me?

The answer is because I am not a politician.  I'm not owned by special interests or out of state dark money- I'm just a community member who is tired of our voices and needs being ignored by the current leadership.

We deserve streets that are adequate for the community, retail that is not just gas stations, community resources like rec centers and libraries and a police presence that keeps us safe and prevents crime.

If in the last four years you  have not seen an improvement in the streets, traffic lights, police presence, city amenities and retail options, then maybe it's time for a change.

Vote for change- have your voice heard.

A City Council for Small Businesses or Special Interests- The Choice is Yours!

Recently, I was contacted by a community member about a small business owner in the community who needed help with a zoning issue near her business. Gleam Car Wash is on Colfax in Ward 2, it is a small business owned by a Colorado resident who built the car wash with specific infrastructure to ensure low water usage and a more sustainable approach to a typical car wash.  She also sold land nearby to allow the city to build affordable apartments.  She truly is invested in her community and wants to ensure the residents have services near by.  Fairly recently a Quik Trip opened on the corner of Airport and Colfax in front of the affordable apartments.

She reached out to me with the following:   "QuikTrip is new to car washing and they use it as an ancillary business – in other words, it supports their already-successful convenience and fuel stations.  They practice predatory pricing – which they admitted in the Planning Meeting – and they lie about how much potable (drinkable) water they use.  They also very cleverly slipped this use into their plan.  They did not call out a car wash when doing the master plan, and none of us were notified at any point while they were seeking their approvals.  The City said that they mailed notices to something like 17 Registered Neighborhood Organizations, but as far as I can tell, they are defunct HOAs.  So essentially, up until QuikTrip tossed a yellow sign up on vacant land in the middle of a construction site 10 days prior to the Planning Hearing, no one had a clue.  This is not how it should work."

This creates a situation where another large national chain who has been allowed to re-zone multiple land parcels throughout the city will potentially build their car wash and pushes a small business owner out of business.

Why does council focus on gas stations and not any other retail opportunities?  Why are we allowing national businesses (with allegedly some questionable practices)  to potentially shut down an existing small business?  In another area of the ward, near Vista Peak, there is a  documented food desert but they are pushing to open a fourth gas station in a 3 mile radius. This makes zero sense.  Communities don't just want gas stations, they need retail,  grocery stores, parks, rec centers and libraries.   Why was her current elected city council person unwilling to help her in any way? I'm glad she came to me and we have community members stepping up to with for her small business but her representative should be helping her not hurting her business.

Change is up to you.  Vote.

A New Kind of Leadership for Ward II

A New Kind of Leadership for Ward II

People often ask me why I’m running. The answer is simple: Ward II deserves proactive, principled, and strategic leadership.

My professional background is in developing strategies for health care products and programs as well as owning a small business. I will apply that same strategic thinking to attract the retail our community deserves. Gas stations are not enough; we need a vibrant, diverse commercial base to strengthen our local economy.

My campaign has basic yet important beliefs:

Representation should be accountable to the community, not to out-of-state donors and dark money.

Leaders must be held to the highest ethical standards. Those who admit to sexual harassment or produce racist content have no place in our city government.

We must champion Aurora’s true story. The false narrative that our city is "overrun with gangs" is not only incorrect, it actively harms our immigrant community and deters the very businesses we need to grow.

Inattention to our infrastructure is a concern. Two lane roads, lack of traffic lights, zero proactive police patrols in the eastern area of the ward is not sustainable. Ward 2 has zero recreation centers or libraries for almost 30K community members- while other wards have multiple.

This lack of vision and integrity has real consequences. Aurora faced a $26 million deficit in the 2026 budget, and $6-8 million of that shortfall is a direct result of a decision made by the current council, including my opponent. Making decisions that benefit a personal business at the expense of the entire city isn't leadership—it's a betrayal of public trust.

I am running to restore integrity, attract opportunity, and represent every resident of Ward II with a clear, community-first strategy.

We may not agree on everything but a nonpartisan city council demands checking egos at the door, having tough conversations, being willing to collaborate and give and take to give Aurora and our citizens the best quality of life we can have and that is my goal. It's time to change the direction of the city- our community members deserve more.

I am so thankful for an endorsement by Colorado Working Families Party.

City Council Recap (9/8/25)

Updates from the 9/8/25 council meeting:

Council is looking at an ordinance that would change the city codes to make dirt bikes and ATV's illegal on any streets (and sidewalks) with a fine going to the parents of any kids under 18 using them. This will be discussed at the Sept 22nd meeting if you want to call in and give feedback- make sure you follow the comment line process outlined on the city's website- there are no in person meetings currently it is all virtual.

They also discussed allowing APD to start using photo radar again for speed enforcement. If you remember, voters decided to remove all red light cameras in 2020 which created a deficit in our city budget. APD is asking for permission to start using speed cameras in residential areas where the speed limit is 35MPH or less. They will hire someone to review all tickets before they go out and anyone going over 25mph above the speed limit will have their ticket reviews for escalated enforcement (i.e. reviewed for reckless driving). This was a heated discussion and it ended with a 7-3 vote in favor.
The areas targeted would be school, park and residential areas and would be used 24/7 to catch late night speeding. Previous programs which were discontinued created a $500,000 cost for the city with only $115,000 in revenue so they were discontinued.
Replays of the council meetings are available on the city Youtube channel.

Aurora Police Department Reform

As a dedicated leader in the Aurora community and a member of the Community Advisory Council for the APD consent decree, I am deeply disturbed by the officer-involved shooting on August 30, 2025, that resulted in the death of Rajon Belt. Our community deserves full transparency, timely and factual updates.
The fact that this shooting happened as we were just honoring the memory of Elijah McClain adds to the tragedy and the need for the community to work together for meaningful change.
I attended the community town hall on Sunday and the community's pain and frustration was palpable.
This tragedy underscores a persistent and urgent need for stronger police accountability in our city—a need that our current systems have failed to meet. Aurora is already operating under a consent decree, yet we have cycled through multiple police chiefs since its inception, and community members have resigned from the advisory board out of frustration and lack of transparancy. This instability and lack of trust cannot continue as it does a disservice to our community and to the good officers we have trying to serve our city.
The existing consent decree provides a crucial framework for reform, covering directives on training, administrative processes, and cultural change within the Aurora Police Department (APD). However, as this incident makes clear, it is not enough. The role of the independent monitor, currently tied to enforcing the decree's specific requirements, must be implemented asap.
We must push for a future monitoring model that goes beyond the baseline agreement to provide rigorous, independent oversight specifically of:
Abuse of power
Officer-involved shootings
Use-of-force incidents
Mental health support for officers
A consent decree sets the rules for reform, but without a powerful and truly independent monitor, those rules cannot be effectively enforced or trusted. Aurora needs both a robust decree and a strengthened, community-focused monitor if we are ever to achieve lasting accountability and the just policing our residents deserve.
At the same time we must look at the mental health support options we have for our community members, especially our veterans. As a nation we often minimize the need for mental health support services and this is a consistent component with many of these tragedies and we need to do better.

Why are some of council wasting tax payers time and money for a personal vendetta?

Over the past years as chairperson of the City's Human Relations Commission, we have been targeted at times by Councilperson Danielle Jurinsky, along with Councilperson Sundberg, Councilperson Hancock and occasionally Councilperson Bergen.   Why was the Human Relations Commission under attack? In 2022 a former member stated he thought they were out of touch with the community.  Thats it.   The freedom of speech they enjoy for themselves is something they do not want of community members if it involves any sort of criticism of them and their actions.  This is not leadership this is authoritarianism.

This retaliatory behavior started in May of 2022 with a phone call where CouncilPerson Jurisnsky told me to "shut up" the person who criticized them on his person social media page or she would find a way to kick him off or get rid of the commission completely.  Over the years they left us alone for the most part until June of 2024 when they started pulling all of our new applications for commissioners instead of voting to appointing them.  This continued for six months where we were the only commission whose applications were not being approved.   Finally in late 2024, I emailed and highlighted the double standard and included members of the press, by January the applications were approved.  The attacks however did not stop and it cumulated with the attempt to dissolve the HRC- despite the fact that we are one of the most active commissions for the city and volunteer hundreds of hours per year for free.

Some of the MAGA members of seem to have a vendetta against anyone who criticizes them and they're using tax payer dollars irresponsibly to further their own agenda.  During council meetings they should be focused on community improvement, addressing budget constraints and furthering the economic advancement of our city.  We have affordable/attainable housing shortages, budget shortages, parts of our city are a food desert, we have an increased level of unhoused residents with limited services, ward 2 has no library or recreation centers for its residents, the eastern areas of the city have limited police support and fire dept response times are not ideal- all of those are topics they could and should be addressing and instead they are focused on a social media post from 2022.  City leadership needs to do better, we as community members deserve better and the future of our city depends on it.

VOTE in November.

City Council Votes Against Human Relations Commission

Aurora deserves ethical, accountable leadership—and right now, we’re not getting it from Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky, Steve Sundberg or Amsalu Kasaaw.

As you may know, I served on the Aurora Human Relations Commission (HRC) for many years, including four as chair. The HRC played a critical role in ensuring fairness and justice in our city, bridging gaps and bringing community together—until Jurinsky led the charge to disband it. But this wasn’t just a policy disagreement; it was retaliation.

In May 2022, Jurinsky called me and explicitly threatened to dismantle the HRC unless I silenced another commissioner who criticized her publicly. Last night, she followed through on that threat. This is an abuse of power, plain and simple. Aurora cannot tolerate leaders who punish dissent, undermine accountability, and disregard the voices of community members.

That’s why I’m asking for your support as we work towards a city council who uses their power to elevate community voices and make decisions with the best interests of our city front of mind, not for their own retaliation or long term political career goals.

I commit to bringing back the principled, transparent leadership Aurora needs—someone who will restore integrity to our government and fight for institutions like the HRC that protect our residents.

In order to do that I need support- please consider donating or volunteering for the campaign so that we can ensure our city leadership represents the community they were elected to serve.

Allow me to re-introduce myself.....

Since I've gained new followers, I thought I might highlight what my focus will be on if I am elected and why I am the right leader for ward 2.

Why I’m Running: A New Path for Aurora & Ward 2

1. Infrastructure That Works for Families
Ward 2 has been left behind—two-lane roadsno rec centers or libraries, and an eastern food desert  force families to spend hours in transit instead of time together. Our youth deserve safe spaces to learn and grow, and our streets must keep up with growth. I’ll fight for equitable infrastructure investments and expanded partnership with city and developers.

2. Collaboration Over Politics
Budget constraints can’t be an excuse for inaction. By partnering with nonprofits, neighboring cities, and local leaders, we can deliver solutions now—like mobile food markets, shared community spaces, and proven programs from other cities. Real progress starts when we work with residents, not around them.

3. Changing Aurora’s Trajectory—Starting With the Truth
For too long, city leaders have pushed a false narrative that Aurora is "dangerous" or that our immigrant communities are a problem. That’s wrong. Our diversity is our strength, but these myths scare away jobs and opportunities. I’ll champion Ward 2’s potential—from attracting businesses to highlighting our vibrant culture—so Aurora grows with pride, not prejudice.

Proven Leadership for Ward 2

When I chaired the Human Relations Commission, I saw how small actions could bridge big gaps.

  • Breaking Barriers Through Books: I launched a community reading event where APS officers, civic leaders, and school officials read to low-income and McKinney-Vento students—then sent each child home with a culturally diverse book for the summer. Why? Because literacy isn’t just a skill; it’s a passport to opportunity and exploration. In Ward 2, where families lack access to local public  libraries, we must create those opportunities.

  • "Never Walk Alone": Aurora’s winters are harsh, especially for our unhoused neighbors. That’s why we organized events providing warm clothing, shoes, and care kits—because no one should fight the cold alone. But charity isn’t enough. As your councilmember, I’ll push for permanent solutions: affordable housing, accessible shelters, and partnerships to ensure everyone has basic dignity—food, shelter, and safety.

Progress starts when we stop accepting "that’s just how it is." Together, we can build a Ward 2 where:
Every child has books and safe spaces to learn and grow.
Every neighbor has a path out of poverty, not just a handout.
Every voice is heard in city decisions—because I’ll always put people over politics.

Immigrants & Refugees are valued residents in Aurora. It’s Time to Honor That.

Our city’s diversity is its strength—but for too long, current leaders have vilified immigrant and refugee communities to score political points. That’s not just cruel; it’s a betrayal of Aurora’s values. People are not pawns. As your councilmember, I’ll fight to:

1. Rebuild Trust Through Action, Not Words:

  • Host community-led forums where immigrants and refugees set the agenda—because they are the experts on their own safety and wellbeing.

  • Partner with trusted organizations (e.g., [local groups like RAICES or Aurora Welcome Center]) to turn their solutions into policy.

2. Dismantle the Scapegoating Playbook:

  • Call out fearmongering rhetoric—and replace it with a vision of Aurora where everyone thrives.

  • Highlight immigrant contributions (e.g., small businesses, cultural vibrancy) to attract more opportunities, not drive them away.

Real leadership means listening more than talking. I won’t claim to have all the answers—but I’ll always center the voices of those most impacted. Together, we can build an Aurora that protectsrespects, and invests in every community.

Campaign Kick Off Event

I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who joined our campaign kickoff this past weekend. I fully recognize that a holiday weekend presents scheduling challenges, and I’m profoundly grateful to each of you who made time to attend—especially our elected officials, friends, family, and, most importantly, our community members.
We’re embarking on a tough fight against an entrenched incumbent backed by lobbyists and corporate interests. In contrast, our campaign is built on community partnerships and grassroots support. This path demands more of us, but it’s the only one that aligns with my core belief: putting Aurora’s people first!
Together, we’ll:
✅ Restore community-focused leadership by collaborating across party lines, nonprofits, and neighborhoods;
✅ Challenge the false narrative that Aurora isn’t safe—and instead, champion practical, evidence-based solutions; which will attract new businesses and opportunity
✅ Rewrite our city’s trajectory by centering common sense and the voices of those who call Aurora home.
This campaign isn’t just about winning an election—it’s about reclaiming our shared future. Thank you for standing with us from the very start.
Thank you to @justin4thornton for attending, community leader @mrenelson

June 23- City Council Recap

  • City Council pay raise of approximately 242% could be added to the ballot this November. This increase would move the pay to be somewhat consistent with Arapahoe County Commissioners.
  • Changing the residency requirements for our city manager will be added to the ballot in November. This would remove residency requirements for our City Manager.
  • Term limits to be voted on in November. This change could potentially allow a city council member to serve indefinitely with no term limits if they were to move between a ward, atlarge and mayor.

May- NE Ward 2 Infrastructure Developments

Ive been working  with city staff on gather the information below since infrastructure is a hot topic in the Eastern area of Ward 2.

Frequently Asked  Infrastructure Questions in the NE Aurora Area:

38th Ave Connections
• 38th from Himalaya to Odessa
o The Majestic Commerce Center development is going to be widening this segment
from 2 to 4-lanes. This has not been designed yet, and we do not currently have a
timeline for completion.
• 38th from Odessa to Picadilly
o This is connection will be jointly funded by ARTA, the Sand Creek Metro District,
the City of Aurora, and the City and County of Denver. The design has not been
done yet, and there is not a timeline for construction available at this time.

• 38th Ave from Tibet to E-470
o This is the responsibility of ARTA. They expect to start construction soon and
finish by the end of this year.

• Note: ARTA is also responsible for building 48th Avenue from E-470 to Aerotropolis Pkwy, and they will complete the connection near E470 this year. That will provide an alternate east/west route before 38th Ave is done.

6th Ave/Stephen D Hogan Pkwy Widening
• The City, in collaboration with CDOT, is conducting a study to implement interim improvements to 6th Avenue aimed at enhancing safety and operations. Due to funding
limitations, there are no plans to widen 6th Avenue from Airport Blvd to Piccadilly Road, which is owned and maintained by CDOT. When new developments are adjacent to the
roadway, the developer is responsible for constructing the necessary lanes, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. In some cases, the City accepts a “deferral” to complete these
improvements when a larger project is more feasible.

• The widening of Hogan Parkway is the City’s responsibility due to a court order tied to the initial right-of-way acquisition. While the City is responsible for the roadway, developers must address right-of-way dedications, sidewalks, landscaping, and necessary
traffic signals.
• City staff are actively working with developers to prioritize Hogan Parkway widening as part of a proposed regional authority, along with other key projects like Gun Club
improvements near Murphy Creek.
We will keep the City Council informed and welcome
resident inquiries for updates.

6th & Catawba Traffic Signal
• The traffic signal at 6th & Catawba is under construction, managed by the City’s Traffic Engineering team. Work is nearly complete, and we’re awaiting Xcel to provide power.
Xcel is scheduled to finish by the end of May, after which the signal will undergo testing and inspection. The signal is expected to be operational by July, but it could be earlier
depending on Xcel’s work.

Powhaton Rd & 1st Ave Intersection
• For a traffic signal to be installed, federal criteria related to traffic volumes and safety
must be met. After evaluating the Powhaton Rd & 1st Ave intersection, we found the criteria are not yet met, though we anticipate they will be soon. The City recognizes the
value of a signal for school traffic patterns and plans to design the signal this year. The City currently only has 50% of the cost for this signal collected from adjacent development, and staff are working on a grant application to cover the additional cost.
The timeline for the signal project will depend on the outcome of the grant application.
Signal installation typically takes 2 years due to coordination with Xcel and equipment lead times, so the earliest it would be operational is 2027.

Little River St & 1st Ave Intersection
• The City received requests for a stop sign at this intersection due to speeding concerns.
However, stop signs are not a solution for speed control—they are for assigning right-of-
way. After collecting data, it was determined that the intersection does not meet the criteria for a 4-way stop. Therefore, no changes are planned at this time.

Colfax Ave & Powhaton Rd Intersection
• This intersection is owned by CDOT, not the City. Currently, there are no plans for a signal at this location from CDOT.
Powhaton Bridge Over I-70
• The Powhaton Bridge over I-70 is the responsibility of CDOT. CDOT recently informed the City that they have received approval to begin repairs, with milling set to start on
May 27. The repairs are expected to take 30 days, and the bridge will be closed for the duration. Detour information will be provided via VMS boards.

Colfax Extension Off Powhaton
• The City is not responsible for this project, and it is likely under CDOT’s jurisdiction.

Harvest Rd & 6th Ave Intersection
• The intersection at 6th & Harvest is planned for future signalization. However, as development progresses, additional roadwork is required, including the construction of a
4th leg to the north. A temporary signal is not feasible due to funding constraints. A recent safety review revealed that traffic signal warrants are not currently met, so the City is not proceeding with signal construction at this time.

Harvest Rd & 4th Ave Intersection
• There are intermittent requests for a traffic signal at Harvest Rd & 4th Ave, but the necessary criteria for signalization and all-way stop control have not been met. Protected pedestrian crossings are already in place at nearby intersections, and the City will
continue to monitor this location for future improvements.

6th Ave & Bison Wy (Vista Peak HS Access)
• 6th Avenue is a city road, while the access to the high school is a private roadway that is owned by the Aurora Public School District (APS).
• City staff have been working closely with Aurora Public School staff to address safety concerns. Before the movement was converted to a right-out only, there were multiple
crashes that involved a driver turning left out of the school access. City staff went over multiple options to convert this access to a right-out only and met with school staff in
May 2022. Due to the short timeframe, school staff moved forward with a quick implementation project that involves delineators and striping. This project has had a
significant safety benefit and crashes have decreased since its implementation. APS has also allocated funding to construct a raised turn island, which will help with driver
compliance. The turn island is being designed by city staff now, and should be constructed this summer. The city will also work with APS to install a right turn only sign as part of this project.

Powhaton Rd & 6th Ave Intersection
• Signalization is planned for the future at Powhaton & 6th. However, the necessary criteria for signalization have not been met, and the intersection is not fully developed.
The City will monitor the situation and assess future needs. Recent improvements,i ncluding signage and striping, have helped reduce resident requests and have shown no
crash pattern.

Jewell & Old Tom Morris
• Traffic engineering staff recently evaluated the Jewell & Old Tom Morris intersection. While traffic volumes and crash data do not currently meet the criteria for signalization,
they are expected to in the coming years. The City will proceed with the design of a traffic signal as part of the next annual design package, with construction anticipated
within two years, pending funding.
• This intersection does not meet criteria for an all-way stop, as there is no significant crash
pattern or high volume to justify it.

Jewell & Flatrock

• Jewell Ave is constructed with the width of a six-lane divided arterial at this location, but only the north half of the roadway is currently open to traffic; one through lane is striped
in the eastbound and westbound directions. This interim striping is in place because Jewell Ave is not fully widened east of Harvest Road, and the through lanes need to tie
into the existing section prior to that location. Flatrock Trl is a 2-lane collector roadway with a posted speed limit of 25 mph. This four-leg intersection is currently stop controlled along Flatrock Trl while traffic on Jewell Ave is free flowing.
• This intersection was recently evaluated by traffic engineering staff to see if criteria is met for a change in intersection control. Traffic volume data was collected, and a detailed
review of crash data was also completed as part of the evaluations. These reviews showed that warrants for signalization and stop control are not close to being met.
• In addition, staff performed a site visit a few months ago to review the sight distance and
overall layout of the intersection. Staff noted that sight distance was limited for northbound drivers. This intersection and the south half of Jewell is currently being modified by a contractor on behalf of a developer. City staff have been coordinating with
the developer to make changes to the signage and striping at the intersection to improve overall sight distance and driver awareness of the non-standard intersection
configuration. The developer prepared and implemented a new signing and striping design to improve sight distance and safety. The changes (made recently) included extending the long line striping along the south leg of Flatrock Trl and installing a
painted white stop bar and a new stop sign at the point where drivers are required to stop.
These changes make it clearer to drivers that they should pull forward further north to stop at the intersection, which improves the sight distance.

Powhaton Streetlights
• Powhaton is still under development, and streetlights will be installed by developers as the roadway is widened. The City does not have a program for installing streetlights
independently; they are put in place according to current standards as development
progresses.

General Information
Access Aurora
• The City’s customer service team, Access Aurora, can assist residents with any questions
or concerns. You can submit a request via the City’s website or use the phone app for
reporting maintenance issues.
High-Impact Traffic Control Work Zones
• The City updates a webpage every week with information about high-impact traffic
control work zones. Residents can sign up for weekly email updates. The City is also
working with Aurora Water on a closure of Powhaton for a project. Efforts are being
made to ensure this closure goes smoothly.
Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program
• The City offers a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (NTCP) to address speeding
concerns on local and collector streets. Residents can request traffic calming measures
such as speed cushions by submitting an application. For more details or to submit  request, email trafficcalming@auroragov.org.
